Leonardo photos

Here are some photos from the Leonardo Guitar Research Project.  Thomas Holt, whom you can see in one of the pictures, tells me that he was very impressed with some of the guitars.  Just one more testimony which tells us we can use alternative woods for guitar-making.

Leonardo Guitar Research Project

The Leonardo Project is a very necessary iniciative in tonewood investigation.  The scarcity of some traditional tonewoods and the recent legislation means that we need to educate the guitarists to accept a different aesthetic.  Most makers already agree that we can use many other wood species and still get the sound we are looking for.  “The main goal for the Leonardo Guitar Research Project is to study, demonstrate and communicate the opportunities of building guitars with non-tropical woods.”  Among many other activities the Cordefactum festival this week in Puurs, Belgium will host an exhibition and demonstrations of guitars made with non-tropical woods.  The festival itself is very interesting:  Fernando Espí will play, Daniele Chiesa will give a talk and Thomas Holt will be displaying his guitars there and he will have a copy of the book “The Granada School of Guitar-makers”  which will very shortly be available through your sheet music seller.

Book Presentation video

This is a video that was shown at the presentation of the guitar-maker’s book.  It has been on Youtube for a few days now but only today were the English subtitles added.  Let me take this opportunity to remind you all to ask your favorite sheet music dealer about getting this book.  I have been in contact with many of the larger publishers and I think they need to hear that people are interested in the book in order to take it on.

Santos Hernández 1939

I love Santos Hernández guitars but I don’t get a chance very often to see one up close and to play and hear it.  Alberto Cuéllar brought this one in just a few days ago because he knew I would want to see it.   I was in a hurry to see how it sounds so I even forgot to look inside at the bracing.  P1030848 As always it is impeccably made and light and responsive.  This one was in very good shape and as I always say if the architecture of the guitars survives then it will still sound good (if it did in the beginning of course).  Some people say that he made a different rosette for each guitar and I can tell you although he seems to have made a lot you can be sure that a true artisan would be more efficient than that.  P1030847Alberto is absolutely thrilled with this guitar and I find myself agreeing that this is a particularily great one.  P1030849The video is the best we could do on short notice and will hopefully give you an idea as to how it sounds.

Misprints and errors

I suppose it is inevitable that in a book of this type there will be some errors committed, be they oversights or ghosts in the machine during layout or printing.  The first to come to the attention of the provincial government is the following:

The shop of Daniel GIl de Avalle is in the plaza del Realejo and not in the plaza Fortuny as stated on page 186.
